The word “Upanishad” means that which eliminates all that is most undesirable in one’s life — namely fear and sorrow — and leads the spiritual aspirant to the knowledge of oneself as pūrṇa, whole and free of strife and limitations. The teaching in the Upanishad is always presented in the form of a special dialogue between the guru and the śiṣya known as saṃvāda, where the student listens to the teacher with utmost reverence.
The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad is one of the most important of the texts in the genre of Hindu spiritual literature. It is a treatise on Ātman and includes many interesting narratives enunciating various aspects of Vedānta philosophy.
In this 5-days retreat being organized by Indica Moksha, the participants will study in depth the Yājñavalkya-Maitreyi Sāmvāda- a special dialogue between the celebrated sages Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi, which expounds the truth of the self as limitlessly whole and joyous. Presented within the larger backdrop of āśrama-dharma (duties at various stages in one’s life), this timeless dialogue highlights important facets of love, Dāmpatya (marriage), and gr̥hastha-āshrama (stage of the householder), and how in the Hindu scheme of life the purpose of marriage and married life is conceived as a preparation for self-knowledge (ātmajñāna) and renunciation (sannyāsa).
