Indic Academy is pleased to extend grants for the upcoming Five-day National Workshop On ‘Natyashastra And The World Today‘ by Prof. Bharat Gupt. We are happy to support five scholars for the workshop.
Anjali Memorial Committee, Vadodara with support from The Institute Of Leadership and Governance, (The Maharaja Sayajirao University Of Baroda) are organizing Five-day National Workshop On ‘Natyashastra And The World Today‘. The 5 day workshop will commence on 22nd January 2020 at the Art Of Living, Gujarat Ashrama, Anklawadi, near Vasad, Vasad-Sarsa road, Dist – Anand, Gujarat. The culmination will be on the Republic Day, 26th January 2020.
The Resource Person for the workshop is Prof. Dr. Bharat Gupt. He is a former Associate Professor in English at the University of Delhi, is an Indian classicist, theatre theorist, sitar and surbahar player, musicologist, cultural analyst, and newspaper columnist. After completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from University of Delhi, he also completed Master’s in English from University of Toronto.
He was awarded PhD for his work titled “A Comparison of Greek and Indian Dramatic Theories as Given in the Poetics and the Natyasastra“. He writes extensively on classical Indian and Greek theatre, comparing their similarities and differences, and has multiple articles and books to his credit. Presently he is a Trustee and Executive member, at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi (Ministry of Culture, Govt of India).
The lectures-interactions will provide a detailed exposition of all the principles of performance in each of the 36 chapters of the Natya Shastra and relate them to the present genres of performance such as plays, dance, music, cinema and painting and sculpture. The text of NS is made a spring board to analyse and contrast many classical ideas with Indian modernity not only in the area of performing arts but in the approach to life as a whole and its relevance and importance in the world today.
There will be daily Meditation and Yoga, Pranayam and ‘keep-fit’ sessions in the morning before the sessions of the workshop. Walks and treks through enchanting scenic splendor will also be organized. A certificate of attendance shall be issued to participants attending the full workshop.
